Most cloud security engineers in Pakistan did not start in security. They began as network engineers, system administrators, or developers, then moved across once they understood how cloud accounts actually get breached. If you already work in IT, you are closer to this job than you might think.

This guide covers the route that works here: which skills to learn and in what order, the certifications worth paying for in 2026, the projects that get you interviews, and the mistakes that cost people a year. Comfortable with basic AWS and want the hands-on part taught in Urdu? Our AWS DevSecOps course covers IAM, CloudTrail, GuardDuty, KMS, and secure CI/CD with labs.

What does a cloud security engineer do?

The job is to prevent the small mistakes behind most cloud breaches: a storage bucket left public, an access key pushed to GitHub, an admin account without MFA, or logs that nobody reads. In a normal week, you might:

  • Write and review IAM policies so every person and service gets only the access it needs
  • Switch on logging (AWS CloudTrail, Azure Monitor) and set alerts for unusual activity
  • Manage encryption keys with AWS KMS or Azure Key Vault
  • Design network rules such as security groups, firewalls, and private subnets
  • Add checks to the CI/CD pipeline so exposed secrets or vulnerable images are blocked before release
  • Collect evidence for audits like ISO 27001 or SOC 2

It is part engineering, part investigation, and part documentation. People who are comfortable with all three usually do well in the role.

Who hires cloud security engineers in Pakistan?

Demand comes from three main groups:

  • Banks and financial institutions. They work under State Bank of Pakistan rules on outsourcing and cloud use, so any workload that moves to the cloud needs controls that an auditor can check.
  • Software houses with foreign clients. Companies exporting services to the US, UK, and Gulf are often asked for SOC 2 or ISO 27001 evidence before a contract is signed. Someone has to build those controls in AWS or Azure and document them.
  • Telecoms, government platforms, and managed service providers. The federal Cloud First Policy (2022) pushes public bodies towards cloud services, and the companies running those platforms need security staff.

Pay for this role is among the highest in Pakistani IT. Our cloud computing salary guide tracks current ranges for cloud security engineers and nine other cloud jobs. Remote roles with foreign companies exist too, though they almost always ask for two or more years of hands-on cloud security work.

Three common ways into cloud security

Very few people are hired as cloud security engineers straight out of university. Employers want someone who has already run systems before trusting them to protect those systems. These are the routes that work best:

From networking or system administration

You already understand firewalls, routing, DNS, and servers. What you need to add is cloud IAM, cloud logging, and some automation. This is the most common path for people coming from CCNA-level jobs at ISPs and telcos.

From DevOps or software development

You know pipelines, containers, and probably Terraform. The gap is security thinking: least privilege, threat detection, and compliance. DevSecOps, which builds security into the delivery pipeline, is the shortest bridge for you.

From a SOC or security analyst role

Incident response and SIEM tools are familiar to you already. You need to get your hands dirty building in the cloud, because you cannot secure services you have never deployed.

If you are a fresh graduate

Aim first for a cloud support, NOC, or junior DevOps role. Learn security alongside that job, build two or three projects, and plan to move across within one to two years. Our DevOps career roadmap explains how to land that first technical job.

Skills to learn, in order

Each stage builds on the one before it. Skipping ahead usually means coming back later.

Stage

What to learn

Practise it by

1. Foundations

Linux command line, TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP and TLS

Setting up a Linux server, reading its logs and configuring its firewall

2. One cloud platform

AWS core services: EC2, S3, VPC, IAM

Building and hosting a small web app in your own AWS account

3. Identity and access

IAM policies and roles, MFA, least privilege, single sign-on

Writing a policy that can read one S3 bucket and nothing else

4. Logging and detection

CloudTrail, CloudWatch, GuardDuty, Security Hub

Generating a test finding and tracing it back through the logs

5. Data protection

Encryption at rest and in transit, KMS, TLS certificates (ACM)

Encrypting a bucket with your own KMS key and turning on key rotation

6. Network security

Security groups, NACLs, AWS WAF, Network Firewall

Placing a WAF in front of a test site and blocking a sample attack

7. Secure delivery

Container security, pipeline scanning, secrets management, Terraform

Building a pipeline that fails when someone commits a secret

8. Governance

AWS Organizations, Config rules, ISO 27001 and SOC 2 basics

Using AWS Config to flag any public bucket automatically

Pick AWS or Azure for stages 2 to 7 and stay with it until you can build and secure a small environment without following a tutorial. Trying to learn both platforms at once slows most people down.

A 12-month roadmap if you already work in IT

  1. Months 1 to 2: Fill any gaps in Linux and networking, then learn AWS core services. Set a billing alarm on day one so practice never turns into an unexpected dollar charge on your card.
  2. Months 3 to 5: Identity, logging, and encryption (stages 3 to 5). Do every exercise in your own account, not only in videos.
  3. Months 6 to 8: Network security and secure delivery: containers, CI/CD, Terraform, and scanning. Our Terraform tutorial is a good starting point for the infrastructure-as-code part.
  4. Months 9 to 10: Build two portfolio projects from the list below and publish them on GitHub.
  5. Months 11 to 12: Sit for your first security certification and start applying.

Coming from DevOps, you can shorten months 6 to 8. Starting with no IT job at all, expect closer to two years, with a support or junior DevOps role in between.

Learn months 3 to 8 in Urdu, with labs

Sherdil's AWS DevSecOps course has 91 lessons and 10.5 hours of video. It starts with Git, Docker, ECS and EKS, AWS CI/CD, CloudFormation and Terraform, then moves to the security services: IAM, CloudTrail, Config, Security Hub, GuardDuty, Inspector, Macie, WAF, Network Firewall and KMS.

Price: ₨15,000. Basic AWS knowledge is recommended before you start, and the first lessons are free to preview.

Certifications worth your money in 2026

Certifications help a lot in Pakistani hiring, as long as they match your experience. Booking the hardest exam first is one of the costliest mistakes people make. An associate-level cloud certification, such as AWS Solutions Architect Associate or Azure AZ-104, makes every security exam easier.

Certification

Level

Take it when

What to know

CompTIA Security+

Entry

Early, if you have no security background

Vendor-neutral and widely recognised. SY0-701 is the current version; CompTIA has announced a new one, so check the official page before booking.

AWS Certified Security Specialty (SCS-C03)

Advanced

After real AWS work

$300, 65 questions, 170 minutes. AWS recommends five years of IT security experience and at least two years securing AWS workloads.

Microsoft SC-500 (Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate)

Intermediate

If your employer runs on Azure

Replaced AZ-500, which Microsoft retired on 31 August 2026. Covers identity, data and network security, compute (including AI workloads) and security posture monitoring.

(ISC)² CCSP

Advanced

At senior level

Requires five years of paid IT experience, three of them in information security. Well regarded by banks and auditors.

Existing AZ-500 holders keep the certification until its normal expiry date, but it can no longer be renewed. For the wider Azure ladder, see our Azure certification path. Exam fees are charged in US dollars; our AWS certification cost guide explains how to pay from a Pakistani card and book a test centre or online exam.

Four portfolio projects that get interviews

  1. A secured AWS account baseline. MFA on the root user, no root access keys, CloudTrail in all regions, AWS Config rules, GuardDuty switched on, and a billing alarm. Explain each control and the risk it removes.
  2. Least-privilege access for a small app. Separate roles for the application, a developer, and an auditor. Include a screenshot of a denied request in CloudTrail to prove the limits work.
  3. A DevSecOps pipeline. GitHub Actions or AWS CodePipeline that builds a Docker image, scans it, checks for secrets, and deploys with Terraform. Break the build on purpose and show the pipeline catching it.
  4. An incident write-up. In an isolated sandbox account, create a test access key, use it, then show which logs reveal what the key did and list the response steps you followed. Never do this with a real key.

Put each project on GitHub with screenshots and a one-page write-up. A hiring manager may spend two minutes on it, so lead with what you secured and why.

Mistakes that slow people down

  • Starting with the Specialty exam. Without hands-on AWS experience, its scenario questions are very hard to reason through.
  • Skipping networking and Linux. Much of cloud security is understanding how traffic and permissions flow. Weak foundations show up quickly in interviews.
  • Learning only from videos. Interviewers usually ask what you have built. Have something to show.
  • Practising without a billing alarm. A resource you forgot to delete can become a dollar charge on a Pakistani card within days.
  • Ignoring the documentation side. Banks and software houses want people who can explain a control to an auditor, not only configure it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a fresh graduate become a cloud security engineer in Pakistan?

Rarely as a first job. Most people start in cloud support, NOC, or junior DevOps roles, build security projects alongside work, and move into security within one to two years.

Do I need a degree for cloud security jobs?

For most roles, certifications and hands-on projects carry more weight than a degree. Some bank and government vacancies still list a degree in their requirements, so check each job ad.

Should I choose AWS or Azure for cloud security in Pakistan?

Both are in demand. AWS is common in software houses, startups, and remote roles, while Azure is strong in banks, large enterprises, and government bodies that already use Microsoft. Choose the platform your current or target employer uses.

How long does it take to become a cloud security engineer?

About 9 to 12 months of focused study if you already work in IT. From zero IT experience, plan for around two years, including time in a support or junior DevOps job.

Will AI replace cloud security engineers?

Unlikely in the near term. AI tools now draft IAM policies and sort through logs faster, but someone still has to judge risk and answer to auditors. Our salary guide lists cloud security among the most AI-resilient cloud roles.
